In the paper are presented data about the work in the last 5 years of the Scientific commission in chemistry at the Higher Attestation Commission in Bulgaria. The Scientific commission in chemistry during the last 5 years has considered 517 procedures for conferment of scientific degrees and academic ranks. Practically half of them (269)  are for conferment of PhD degree. The age of the candidates for the scientific degree is about 35.2 years. The age of the candidates for the academic rank “associate professor” and “full professor” is higher – 51.4 and 58.6 years, respectively. The reasons for this rise in age in the field of chemistry is discussed. At the same time the distribution of the conferment degrees and academic ranks for different scientific directions are presented.
